Disaster Assistance:
Who Will Help You
Stay in Business?

If a disaster threatens the health of your practice, these financial resources could help you rebuild your facility or clientele:

1. The AVMA offers a disaster-relief fund. Any practicing veterinarians affected by a disaster can apply for up to $5,000 per incident. For more information, visit www.avmf.org.

2. Small Business Administration (SBA) Economic Injury Disaster Loans provide money for small businesses to cover obligations that the business would have met had the disaster not occurred. The organization loans up to $1.5 million per business for a period up to 30 years, and the interest rate can’t exceed 4 percent. Filing deadlines may apply. For more information, call (800) U-ASK-SBA or visit www.sba.gov/disaster.

3. SBA Physical Disaster Business Loans provide money to repair or replace buildings or equipment damaged or destroyed by the disaster to pre-disaster condition. In some cases, the organization may provide these loans by refinancing an existing mortgage at 4 percent or 8 percent interest for 30 years. Filing deadlines may apply. For more information, call (800) U-ASK-SBA or visit www.sba.gov/disaster.

4. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) offers low-interest disaster loans and grants for businesses that may include assistance with working capital. For more information, call (800) 462-9029 or visit www.fema.gov.

5. Your state or area Veterinary Medical Association may be able to help you relocate, organize temporary sharing of veterinary facilities, coordinate volunteers, or offer all kinds of assistance from colleagues who would like to help.

6. The American Red Cross may offer services that could help affected staff members, clients, and small businesses. I’m thinking of traditional Red Cross type services such as food, shelter, blankets, medicine, comfort, helping victims communicate with their families and each other, coordinating dispersion of donated aid.

Anything that helps people stay in the area helps the business. Helping affected staff members with food and clothes helps the business, there may be Red Cross volunteer animal lovers who would stand outside the vet clinic and help direct people, etc.  For more information, call 866-GET- INFO or visit www.redcross.org/services/disaster.

7. The IRS offers tax relief to victims of Presidentially declared disasters. This may include penalty relief, early refunds, deadline extensions and other tax relief. Tax relief is real financial assistance. Find out more at www.irs.gov or by calling 866-862-5227.
